"Ornementa" at
la Galerie du 19M

19M 1600x900

Playful, experimental, and initiatory, "Ornementa" was conceived to accompany a large-scale project undertaken by Studio MTX and the resident art Houses of le19M

the Genesis of the project

To mark the reopening of the Grand Palais in Paris after a major renovation project of which CHANEL was one of the main sponsors. A curtain measuring 15 by 8 metres will be installed in front of the large glass wall separating the nave from the central square of the Grand Palais, which will be unveiled when the building is inaugurated in June 2025.

More than just a vast introductory workshop to the Métiers d’art, the true essence of "Ornementa" lies in the monumental, shared, and immersive experience that will take place under the dome of the Grand Palais.

a Monumental workshop dedicated
to Arts and Crafts

Mirroring this exceptional work, which called on the leading craftsmen and women of le19M, la Galerie du 19M is inviting the general public, schoolchildren, families, enthusiasts, and novices to the Métiers d’art to become artisans for a day and design a second monumental curtain by trying their hand at the unique savoir-faire of le19M.

In this way, "Ornementa" will celebrate the transmission of the handicrafts and the spirit of collaboration that have been the pillars of la Galerie du 19M since it opened in January 2022.

In a vast, dreamlike setting, visitors will be able to experience the raw materials, colours, and gestures used to create the ornamental elements of this monumental curtain. In an unprecedented collaboration, le19M’s resident companies — Atelier Montex, Goossens, Lemarié and the Plissé-Lognon workshop, Lesage, Maison Michel, Massaro, Paloma, and Studio MTX.

Along the way, there will be a charms-making workshop run by LA CAGE, the duo who were finalists at the 2024 Hyères Festival.

Programming

True to its vocation as a space open to all, la Galerie will be transformed into a playground for discovery, thanks to a colourful scenography designed by Studio GGSV, who also designed the furniture for la Galerie and le Café du 19M. This setting will be brought to life thanks to a programme that celebrates the dialogue between contemporary creation and the Métiers d’art:

  • Participatory experimentation spaces (wool felting, metal texturing, leather braiding, etc.);

  • Installations by the artists Alix Bortoli, Marina Dellocore, Michel Jocaille, and Théophile Peris;

• Creative workshops for all ages run by the artists

• Monthly late-night openings.
